The new Excess 11 marks an important milestone for the marine industry as the world’s first production multihull integrating Elium® recyclable resin and recycled glass fibres. Developed by Groupe Beneteau after years of research and collaboration with leading industry partners, the project brings circularity into real-world boatbuilding.
From composite waste to new possibilities
Composite materials have transformed yacht construction, offering strength, lightness and performance. But their end-of-life recycling has remained one of the industry's biggest challenges.
Elium® recyclable resin offers a different approach. At the end of a component’s life, the resin and glass fibres can be separated, recovered and reused. The Excess 11 takes this technology one step further by incorporating 45% recycled glass fibres, helping reduce the need for virgin raw materials while moving composite boatbuilding closer to a circular model.
This is not simply an idea for the future. It is already being applied to a production catamaran.
Innovation with a bigger purpose
Behind the Excess 11 is a wider industrial effort involving Groupe Beneteau and partners across the materials and recycling sectors, including Arkema, Veolia, Composite Recycling, Owens Corning and Chomarat. Together, they are developing a closed-loop approach that can address both production waste and, in the longer term, boats reaching the end of their life.
For Groupe Beneteau, the objective goes beyond meeting future regulations. It is about changing how boats are built and creating more responsible solutions without compromising the qualities sailors expect: performance, reliability and the pleasure of sailing.
